She was born April 5, 1902, in Michael, Ill., to Roman and Mary Annie (Gress) Becker. She married Paul F. Godar on June 28, 1921, in Michael. He died Sept. 5, 1971. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Norbert's Catholic Church and the Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary, all in Hardin.

Survivors include two sons, Alfred Godar of Jerseyville and Manuel Godar of Florida; five daughters, Geraldine Krause of Kane, Elaine Turner of Alton, Rosalie Beiermann of White Hall, Donna Droege of St. Charles, Mo., and Melba Tepen of Hardin; 35 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Alice Baalman; three sons, Cecil, Romeo and Patrick Godar; five sisters; two brothers; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin,with Father Tom Hagstrom officiating. Burial will be at St. Norbert's Cemetery in Hardin. Memorials may be given to masses, St. Norbert's Church or school or the Calhoun Care Center in Hardin.

He was in the Military Service in the U. S. Air Force and was a World War II Veteran. He married Viola Frances Griffin 4-28-1942. She was the daughter of Wesley Griffin & Anna (Westfall) Griffin. Viola Frances Griffin was born 1-12-1926 in Jersey County, IL, and died 11-11-1985 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home, Jerseyville, Jersey County, IL. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Fieldon, Women of the Moose and St. Mary Altar Society. She was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL.

(Note: Anna (Westfall) Griffin was my father Walter Edward Westfall's sister and my aunt, and her daughter Viola who married Alfred Godar was my cousin.)

Paul Frederick and Theresa Agnes (Becker) Godar's son Alfred Godar's obituary - Alfred Godar, 84, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis County after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Hardin, son of Paul Frederick and Theresa Agnes (Becker) Godar. He was raised in Hardin and married the former Viola Frances Griffin on April 28, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton. Shortly after their marriage, he entered World War II, serving with an elite bomb squad in Europe with the U.S. Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and began working at the Western in East Alton for a short time before he and his wife purchased a farm near Fieldon. He remained active in farming for many years and retired shortly after the death of his wife on Nov. 11, 1985. During the same time period, he also served as road commissioner for English Township for 20 years.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Roberta Godar of Eldred; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Ted Groppel, Theresa and Richard Killion, and Sylvia "Sug" and David Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Geraldine Krause of Kane, Elaine Turner of Alton, Donna Droege of St. Charles, Mo., and Melba Tepen of Hardin; as well as his former wife, Dorothy, and her daughter, Juanita. In addition to his wife, Viola, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Manuel, Cecil, Romeo and Patrick Godar; and two sisters, Rosalee Beiermann and Alice Baalman. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recitation at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow as celebrant. He will be buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon with military graveside rites conducted by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools of Jerseyville or to Masses.

Alfred Godar's wife Viola F. (Griffin) Godar's obituary - Viola F. Godar, 59, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday Nov. 11, 1985 at Greenwood Manor nursing Home in Jerseyville. She was born in Jersey County, a daughter of Anna (Coleman) Griffin of Jerseyville and the late Wesley Griffin. On April 28, 1942, she married Alfred Godar, who survives.

In addition to her mother and husband, surviving are one son, Dwain of Fieldon; three daughters, Wanda Groppel, Theresa Killion and Sylvia Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Griffin of Washington and Virgil Griffin of Jerseyville; and two sisters. Eunice Kessler of Oregon and Jeneva McClintock of Arizona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the church where she was a member.

"Ted" Groppel's father Raymond Charles Groppel's obituary - Raymond Charles Groppel, 93, died peacefully at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Born in Rosedale on Sept. 28, 1907, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Hettwick Louisa Amelia (Isringhausen) Groppel. Growing up in Rosedale, he farmed in the area as a young man until around 1945 when he opened a grocery/gas business in Rosedale. He and his wife operated the store for a few years before he began his career at Olin Corp. where he worked in the Metallic Manufacturing department, retiring in 1963. He married the former Jewell Susan McAdams on Feb. 28, 1934, in Wood River. They were married 30 years before their marriage ended tragically when she was killed in an accident on Dec. 7, 1964. He later married Adolia (Hagen) Ruyle on April 26, 1981, in Jerseyville. She died July 7, 1994. Surviving are four children and their spouses, Agnes A. and Ralph Cates of Alton, Harold T. "Ted" and Wanda Groppel of Jerseyville, Dr. Stanley and Dr. Carol Groppel of Clarksville, Tenn., and Judy S. and the Rev. John Hartleroad of Metropolis; a stepson and his wife, Donald and Bertha Ruyle and their families of Kankakee; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. and Ruth Groppel of Jerseyville; and a sister, Naomi Gilman of Jerseyville. A sister, Edna Groppel and a brother, Edward Groppel, preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Father William Hembrow, assisted by the Rev. John Hartleroad, Groppel's son-in-law, will officiate. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Jewell, in the Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the National Parkinson Foundation or to the American Diabetes Association.

"Ted" Groppel's mother and his father Raymond Charles Groppel's 1st wife Jewell Susan (McAdams) Groppel's obituary - Jewell Susan Groppel, 50, wife of Raymond Groppel, was dead on arrival at St. Joseph hospital as a result of an accident. She was struck and killed by an auto as she attempted to cross highway 67, in front of her home. Her daughter Judy, 16, who was with her escaped injury. Mrs Groppel had lived at the Godfrey area home for 4 years and prior to that in Jersey county. She was born in Jersey county on September 1, 1914, a daughter of the Late Mr & Mrs Henry McAdams. She was a married in 1934 to Raymond Groppel. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Judy, and Mrs Agnes Cates, Humbert Road; 2 sons, Harold T, Jerseyville and Stanley, at home; 3 sisters, Mrs Maudie Doris, Alton; Mrs Almeda Engel, Greenfield, ND Mrs Velma Sconce, Grafton and 1 brother, Henry Clay McAdams, Otterville. Her parents and 1 sister preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial in Fieldon cemetery.

Alfred and Viola (Griffin) Godar's daughter Wanda Faye (Godar) Groppel's husband Harold T. "Ted" Groppel's sister Agnes Arlene (Groppel) Cates's obituary - Agnes Arlene Cates, 76, died at 10:24 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at the Robings Manor in Brighton, after a period of declining health. She was born in Rosedale Township of Jersey County on Jan. 2, 1935, and was one of four children born to the late Raymond C. and Jewell (McAdams) Groppel. She graduated in 1953 from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville and soon married Ralph J. Cates on Sept. 5, 1953. Together, they have shared 58 years together and are the proud parents of six children, three boys and three girls. Agnes began her professional career at Mallinckrodt Chemical in St. Louis, and was employed as a lab technician at Monsanto in St. Louis as well. She and her husband, Ralph, were loyal and devoted members of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Godfrey, where they both served as custodians for 30 years. Agnes also served on numerous church boards and committees, along with serving as head usher for several years. After retiring, she pursued a lifelong passion of photography, and became an accomplished nature photographer, earning several awards in recognition of her work.

Surviving are her husband, Ralph J. Cates of Alton; three daughters and a son-in-law, Monica Howerton of Bunker Hill, Beverly and Fred Disch of New Braunfels, Texas, and Carol Asbury of Alton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Caye Cates of Yakima, Wash., Jay and Pam Cates of Brighton, and David and Ginger Cates of Santa Fe, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold "Ted" and Wanda Groppel of Jerseyville, and Drs. Stanley and Carol Groppel of Clarksville, Tenn.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Rev. John Hartleroad of Springfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kenneth Howerton Jr. on June 7, 2011. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at the Godfrey Congregational Church at 6104 Godfrey Road. He was born July 25, 1974, in Alton, to Dwain Godar and Susan Wadlow Godar Schmidt. He married the former Lana McCart. She died Jan. 11, 2007. He worked at Olin Corp. in East Alton and most recently was a member of Iron Workers Local 392 in East St. Louis.

Surviving are his father and his wife, Roberta Godar, of Eldred; his mother and her husband, Robert Schmidt of Jerseyville; two daughters, Lauren Godar and Payge Godar of Caseyville; a twin sister, Tracy Tonsor of Jerseyville; a brother and his wife, Doug and Amy Godar of Jerseyville; two stepsisters and a spouse, Lisa and Tom Green of Otterville and Pam Kanallakan of St. Louis; three nieces, Emily, Samantha and Paytne Godar; and a nephew, Jackson Tonsor. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Irene Wadlow and Alfred and Viola Godar. Visitation, with a 3:45 p.m. rosary service, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3. Chandler, 60, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Alton Sept. 1, 1948, one of four children born to the late John G. and Dorothy (King) Chandler. She graduated from Jersey Community High School and worked in the packing department at Mead Packaging in Godfrey for many years. She later attended nursing school and cared for her parents in their later years. She is survived by her longtime and loving companion, Sandra Baker of Carrollton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Jackie Chandler of Mattoon and David and Sylvia Chandler of Jerseyville; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Sue Chandler of Jerseyville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John R. Chandler, on March 26, 2003. The body was donated to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Alfred and Viola (Griffin) Godar's daughter Sylvia (Godar) Chandler's husband David Chandler's grandmother Lillie Mae (Hawkins) King's obituary - 28 October 1965: "Mrs. Frank King died Thursday in Jersey hospital" Mrs. Lillie Mae King, wife of Frank King of Jerseyville died Thursday afternoon, 21 October at 3 o'clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been admitted late the previous evening. She had been in ill health for sometime. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home and then at the Gospel Assembly Church where final rites were held Monday afternoon, 25 October at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Harry Frazer, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. King was a daughter of the late James and Viola Davis Hawkins and was born in Jersey county 2 May 1902. Her age at the time of death was sixty-three years, five months and nineteen days. Surviving her in addition to her husband are seven children, Mrs. John Chandler, Robert Ralph King, Mrs. George R. Neikirk and Mrs. Gerald Cates of Jerseyville, William L. and Maurice Eugene King of Brighton and Mrs. Arthur Smith of Godfrey; one brother, Howard Hawkins of Calif.; six sisters, Mrs. Fred Bunzy of Brighton, Michigan; Mrs. Jess Boomer of Oregon, Mrs. Esto Shaw of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ora Beard of Godfrey, Mrs. Henry Dawdy of Aurora, and Mrs. Gilbert Greling of Van Dyke, Mich. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Tom Beiermann and Rick (wife, Donna) Beiermann, both of White Hall; two daughters, Jean (husband, Robert) Taylor of St. Louis and Sharon (husband, Gregory) Becker of Fishers, Indiana; five grandchildren, Anthony Taylor, Jeff (wife, Shannon) Taylor, Scott (wife, Rebecca) Becker, Shawn Becker and Kristen Becker; two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Grace Taylor; one brother, Alfred Godar of Jerseyville and four sisters, Geraldine Krause of Kane; Elaine Turner of Alton; Donna (husband, Jim) Droege of St. Charles, Missouri and Melba (husband, Steve) Tepen of Hardin. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Pat Godar, Romeo Godar, Cecil Godar and Manuel Godar and one sister, Alice Baalman.

Mrs. Beiermann was an LPN, working at Passavant Area Hospital and area nursing homes. She last worked at the White Hall Hospital from where she retired in the early 1980's. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed playing in canasta clubs. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2005 at All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with a prayer services at 4:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to All Saints Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association.

He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Jerseyville to Anthony and Josephine (Goetten) Beiermann. He married the former Rosalie Godar on Oct. 7, 1944, in Hardin. He served for 16 years on the Jersey County Board where he enjoyed working on the Road and Bridge Committee with a group of close friends. He was employed at the Illinois Powder Company in Grafton in his early years, continuing to farm on the family farm. In his later years, he was in the real estate business with a special interest in farm appraisal.

He is survived by four daughters Katheleen Atkinson of Elberta, Ala., Judith Zimmer of Barcelona, Spain, Cynthia Tranquilli of Alvarado, Texas and Margaret Carrow of Godfrey; one son, Thomas O'Donnell of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary O'Donnell of Mojacar, Spain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and a special grandson, Rufus Warford. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey. Godar, 87, of Jefferson City, died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at the home of his brother in St. Louis. He was born on Oct. 4, 1919, in St. Louis, the son of James Edward and Nellie Genevieve McDonald Godar. He was married on Nov. 27, 1948 in Jefferson City to Catherine "Katy" Rolfes who died on March 20, 2001. He was a 1938 graduate of Jerseyville (Illinois) Township High School and received a Bachelor degree in 1942 from St. Louis University. He received a Master degree in Personnel Psychology from Ohio State University in 1946. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was employed with the Missouri Merit System Council and served as Acting Merit System Supervisor from 1946-1947. He served as Assistant Director of the newly created Missouri State Division of Personnel and continued in that position until he was appointed as Division Director in 1973. While Director, he also served as a member and vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Missouri State Employee's Retirement System for thirteen years. He was a past member of the Executive Committee of the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. In October, 1977, he received the Public Personnel Award of the Governor's Committee for his contribution to employment of qualified handicapped individuals. After forty years of state service, he retired on Aug. 1, 1986, and was subsequently given the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Administration by the Missouri Institute for Public Administration. Following retirement, he served on the Work Force Task Force of Governor Carnahan's Committee on Management and Productivity in 1994. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Jefferson City Area United Way; Committee on Personnel of the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Jefferson City Government; Board of Regents of St. Mary's Health Center; Mid-Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association; Board of Directors of Homemaker Health Care, Inc.; and a long-time member of American Legion Post 5.

In recent years he was an active volunteer with Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility where his wife had been a patient for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral where he was active with the Legion of Mary and the parish school board; Dan C. Coppin Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus; International Personnel Management Association; American Psychological Association; Missouri Institute of Public Administration; and a charter member of Meadow Lake Acres Country Club. (1aa) John Alfred and Nellie (Devine) Godar's daughter Elois (Godar) Simon's obituary - Elois Godar Simon, 92, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008. She was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Calhoun County. Her parents were the late John Alfred and Nellie Devine Godar. She and August H. "Doc" Simon were married on July 15, 1947, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mattoon, Ill. Msgr. Daniel Daly, a former pastor of St. Norbert Church, officiated at their wedding. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 2001. She attended local schools and one year at Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield, Ill. She was active in politics of the Democratic Party and was appointed by Gov. Adlai Stevenson to two terms as Public Guardian and Conservator of Calhoun County. She encouraged Carl H. Wittmond to run for the office of State Representative and he served seven terms. She was a lifelong member of St. Norbert Catholic Church and was active in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, an organization founded by Bishop William A. O'Connor of Springfield. She served as Confraternity Secretary of the Jacksonville Deanery and Calhoun parishes. She was a volunteer for various fund drives, including the March of Dimes, and succeeded Ada Aderton as chairman of the Calhoun County American Red Cross, also serving as chairman of the Red Cross military service during the final days of the Korean Conflict and throughout the Vietnam War. She helped to establish the Red Cross blood program for Calhoun County.

She started writing for the Calhoun Herald in 1945 and became editor when Carl Wittmond bought the paper from the Lamar family in 1961. She retired from the Herald in 1982. She retired in 1973 after 25 years of federal employment as manager of the AAA (Agricultural Agency) office and the Selective Service System. She was a crew leader on the 1950 population census and a charter member of the Calhoun County Historical Society. She served as secretary of the Calhoun County Planning Commission from 1973 to 1982 and was a longtime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 636. She loved the bluffs and rivers that formed the shoreline. Surviving are two sons, Eugene and Pete Simon, both of Hardin; two daughters, Phyllis Day of Champaign and Yvonne Ringhausen of Williamsburg, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Godar of Iowa and Fred Godar of Florissant, Mo.; and a sister, Ruth Schaberg of St. Charles, Mo. Preceding her in death, along with her parents and husband, is a daughter, Mary Lou Albrecht. According to her wishes, the body was cremated and a memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date. John was born to John and Nellie (Devine) Godar in Hardin, Ill., on Nov. 5, 1919, joining siblings, Eloise and Ruth. Later, his brother, Fred was born. John was preceded in death by sisters, Agness Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Kathleen Dolores and Naomi Lee, all who died before adulthood. Growing up along the Illinois River, John had a love of nature and began learning the carpenter trade from his grandfather, Albro Devine. During World War II, John enlisted in the Army and served as a staff sergeant in England, North Africa and Italy. Returning to the states, John went to trade school in St. Louis, Mo. There he met his future wife, Mary Dorothy Pospishil, the daughter of Ed and Flore nce (Postel) Pospishil from Martelle, Iowa. On June 17, 1947, John and Mary were married and recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.

John and Mary moved to Cedar Rapids, where John was employed as a Master Carpenter, and eventually as a superintendent. In 1956, John and Mary moved to Marion and lived there for 54 years. They had 13 children, 27 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. They were longtime members of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion American Legion Post 298, and were active supporters of their children and grandchildren's activities. John and Mary lived at the Iowa Veterans Home since February 2007. John was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Eloise. Henry and Olive (Green) Godar's daughter Edith Ethel Godar's obituary article - Edith Ethel Godar, 14, daughter of Mr & Mrs Henry Godar, died and funeral held at Baptist church. Rev J R Reynolds. Among those from afar attending the funeral, was ?? ------ ------ of Dow, who in spite of all warnings came per buggy, holding her 3 week old baby closely wrapped in warm clothing in her arms. 2 miles from Jerseyville the young mother took a look at the babe and found it safe; still, when the house of mourning was reached and the little one taken out of the wraps, the spark of life had escaped. The coroner, Dr N F Bray, held the inquest, impaneling: Clyde Cope, Charles Guber (Gubser??), James Heter, Harry E Weller and Rudolph and John Green as the jury. They returned a verdict of suffocation. The babe was buried beside the grave of Miss Edith Ethel Godar.

(Note: I believe the baby mentioned who died in the obituary article above was the child of Henry and Olive (Green) Godar's son Henry Lester Godar and his wife Lucy. The baby died while they were attending the funeral for the death of Henry Lester Godar's sister Edith who died at age 14, and the baby was buried in a grave beside Edith.

He was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Calhoun County to August and Alta (Humphry) Godar. He married the former Marcella Ann McNelly on May 5, 1973, in Hardin. She died Dec. 21, 2005. He had worked at Owens-Illinois Glass, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus 9417 and St. Norbert's Catholic Church, all in Hardin.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, in addition to Tony and Beth Godar of Hardin; one brother, Robert and Angie Godar of Glenwood, Ind.; two sisters, Julia Rose Kinder and Dorothy (Beth) Arnold, both residents of Calhoun Care Center in Hardin. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marie Willis; and two brothers, Jerome and William (Billy Joe) Godar. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 27, at Hanks-Gress Funeral Home in Hardin. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, at St. Norbert's Catholic Church. Father Bill Kessler will officiate. Burial will be at St. Norbert's Catholic Cemetery. David Godar's wife Marcella A. (McNelly) Godar's obituary - Marcella A. Godar, 75, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at her home. She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Belleview, Ill., to Rinnie and Lucy A. (Jones) McNelly. She married David N. Godar on May 5, 1973, in Hardin. He survives. She had worked at the Bank of Calhoun County in Hardin, where she held many positions for over 40 years before retiring. She was a member of the Hardin Presbyterian Church, secretary of the American Cancer Society Calhoun Chapter and a member of the Calhoun Red Hat Ladies.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one brother, Norman McNelly of Pittsfield; one sister, Jean Ogden of Alhambra; a nephew, Jim McNelly of Pittsfield; and numerous other nephews and nieces. Her parents and three brothers, Owen, Willard and Odell McNelly, preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin. The Rev. Paul D. Frazier will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hardin Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at St. Norbert's Cemetery, Hardin. Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church of Hardin or the American Cancer Society.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America Court of St. Joan, both in Carrollton. Her door was always open and a pot of coffee was always on. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol (husband, Harold) Becker of Normal, Cathy (husband, David) Williams-Hobold of Carrollton, Liz (husband, Eric) Ivers of Jerseyville, Barb (husband, Gary) Simpson of Fieldon; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Doug and Steve Becker, Matt Williams, Natasha Foiles, Jason and Luke Ivers, Todd and Kristy Simpson; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Kinder of Golden Eagle and Beth Arnold of Jerseyville; three brothers, Jerome Godar of Hardin, Robert Godar of Glenwood, Ind., and David Godar of Hardin. In addition to her parents and husband, a brother, Billy Godar, preceded her in death. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, with a 6 p.m. prayer service. (1aa) Pearl and Agnes Bernice (Goshorn) Devening's daughter Lena (Devening) Goeman's husband Henry Goeman's obituary - Henry Goeman, 89, died unexpectedly at 7:41 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at his residence. He was born March 7, 1917, in English Township, the son of Henry and Dora (Hetzel) Goeman. He married the former Lena G. Devening on Oct. 13, 1940, in Elsberry, Mo. They shared nearly 59 years together before her death on June 7, 1999. He was raised on the same farm he currently resided on and farmed his entire life, as well as operated Goeman Trucking. Agriculture was important to him, as he was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, Jersey County Fair Board for many years, serving as the tractor pull supervisor for 25 years, and an original organizer of the former Fieldon Booster Club.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis Frazer and Bernice and Ronald Guilander, all of Jerseyville; two grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda and Kerry Hall of Kane, Jeff and Donna Guilander of Jerseyville; five great-grandchildren, Kourtnee, Kurt and Khloee Hall, and Ronnie and Christopher Guilander. In addition to his wife, his parents; a son-in-law, George Frazer; and a sister, Catherine Briggs, preceded him in death. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the Fieldon United Church of Christ, where he was a longtime member, or the Jersey County Health Department.
