He was a son of Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope. He married Ida Gondolia "Dola" Ontis 10-2-1907 in Jersey County, IL. She was born in 1887 and died in 1970. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery. Ed "Heck" Cope and Dola (Ontis) Cope had 4 children-Irene Cope, Grace Cope, Lucille Cope, and James Cope.

George Wadlow Sr's father Otho Wadlow was born February 4, 1877 in MO, and died in 1966 in Jersey Co., IL, a son of Thomas F. Wadlow born in MO in 1853. George Wadlow's mother Lula (Vincent) Wadlow was a daughter of George and Alice (Cope) Vincent. She was born 4-17-1880 Jersey Co., IL, and died 6-7-1960 in Jersey Co., IL. Her burial was in Rosedale Cemetery, Rosedale Township, Jersey Co., IL. George Wadlow's grandfather and his father Otho Wadlow's father Thomas F. Wadlow's parents were John W. Wadlow and Cynthia Tharpe (Thorp?). John W. Wadlow was born to William Wadlow and Nancy Bishop. William Wadlow was born to John Wadlow and Mary Arnold. Otho Wadlow's father and George Wadlow Sr's grandfather Thomas F. Wadlow married Lucy Miriam Parks on August 5, 1875 in Reynolds Co., MO. Lucy Miriam Parks was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Parks and Lucinda Rayfield. Her birth date was December 4, 1853 in Reynolds Co., MO. Lucy M. (Parks) Wadlow died in Otterville, Jersey Co. IL on August 6, 1942 at the age of 88. Her father Andrew Jackson Parks was born in Georgia on November 13, 1823, and her mother Lucinda Rayfield was born in Kentucky on September 20, 1826.

Wadlow retired in 1963 as a construction laborer. He was born in Jersey County, son of the late Otho & Lula (Vinson) Wadlow. On September 24, 1923, in Alton, he married the former Irene Cope, and she survives.
Also surviving are 1 son, George "Bud" Wadlow Jr of Jerseyville; 4 daughters, Thelma Moore of Flint, MI, Peggy Ridenbark of Fieldon, and Opal Molohon and Susan Godar, both of Jerseyville; 24 grandchildren; 43 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother Howard Wadlow of Jerseyville. Preceding him in death were 1 son, Stewart Wadlow; 1 daughter, Anna DeSherlia; 1 brother, and 2 sisters. Visitation and service was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Dave Cauley officiated and burial was in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to charity of one's choice.

He was born Nov. 22, 1984, in Alton, the son of Jeffrey Lee and Theresa Diane (Wadlow) Powers. He had been employed with Alter Barge Lines and was currently a service technician at Wells-Norris in Jerseyville for the past four years.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, Jeffrey and Thelma Powers of Grafton; two children, Matthew Douglas Powers and Madalynn LeeAnne Nicole Powers, both of Waco, Texas; a brother, Ryan Lee Powers of Jerseyville; a nephew, Ryder Lee Powers of Jerseyville; and the mother of his two children, Amber Brown of Waco. He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Powers; his grandparents, Arthur "Dutch" and Emma Powers; and Stewart and Beatrice Wadlow. Visitation was Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5. The Rev. David Hargriss will officiate. Anna Grace (Wadlow) DeSherlia's husband Claude M. DeSherlia's obituary - Claude M. DeSherlia, 85, died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Jerseyville Manor. He was born Dec. 28, 1925, in Deerplain, Ill., to Ross and Gladys (Reeves) DeSherlia. His marriage to the former Edith Edelmann took place July 17, 1982, in Hardin. He retired after 30 years of service to his country in the United States Navy and the United States Army, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He had worked as a deputy sheriff at the Jersey County Sheriff's Office and retired in 1991 as a site security officer at Pere Marquette State Park. He was a member of the Grafton American Legion Post 648, a lifetime member of the Jerseyville VFW Post 4528, and Retired Enlisted Association (TREA).
Survivors include his wife of Fieldon, Edith DeSherlia; three sons, Chino "Bob" DeSherlia of Branson, Mo., Dale DeSherlia of Tennessee and Daniel DeSherlia of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Burns and Joyce Senger, both of Grafton; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Marie DeSherlia; first wife, Anna Grace (Wadlow) DeSherlia; son, Claude DeSherlia Jr.; brother, Paul DeSherlia; and sisters, Dorothy Hodge and Delores Berrgan. Anna Grace (Wadlow) DeSherlia's husband Claude M. DeSherlia's sister Peggy Ann (DeSherlia) Burns's obituary - Peggy Ann Burns, 82, died at 1:13 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born in St. Louis on March 5, 1929, and was one of six children born to Ross and Marie Blanche (Crawford) DeSherlia, now deceased. Peggy was raised in Grafton and was a graduate of the Grafton High School. As a lifelong resident of Grafton, Peggy and her husband, Stanley, owned and operated Peg and Stans Restaurant in Grafton for 20 years, and she continued to be admired for her hospitality, always enjoying cooking for family and anyone else that walked through their doorway. She enjoyed playing bingo, but her true joy was time spent with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her husband, Stanley Burns; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy and Becky Burns of Grafton and Jim Burns of Ramsey; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Mike Romano of Godfrey; five grandchildren and their spouses, Andy Austin of Arkansas, Chad and Amie Burns of Freeburg, Amy and Joel Hall of Alton, Rose and Jesse Wilson of Florissant, Mo., and Michael Romano of St. Louis; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bob Senger of Grafton. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Paul DeSherlia and Claude DeSherlia; and two sisters, Dorothy Hodge and Delores Berrigan. He was born July 25, 1974, in Alton, to Dwain Godar and Susan Wadlow Godar Schmidt. He married the former Lana McCart. She died Jan. 11, 2007. He worked at Olin Corp. in East Alton and most recently was a member of Iron Workers Local 392 in East St. Louis.
Surviving are his father and his wife, Roberta Godar, of Eldred; his mother and her husband, Robert Schmidt of Jerseyville; two daughters, Lauren Godar and Payge Godar of Caseyville; a twin sister, Tracy Tonsor of Jerseyville; a brother and his wife, Doug and Amy Godar of Jerseyville; two stepsisters and a spouse, Lisa and Tom Green of Otterville and Pam Kanallakan of St. Louis; three nieces, Emily, Samantha and Paytne Godar; and a nephew, Jackson Tonsor. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Irene Wadlow and Alfred and Viola Godar. Visitation, with a 3:45 p.m. rosary service, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3. He was a farmer and was born August 29, 1900 in Fieldon, a son of Frank & Emma (Bethel) Gunterman. Surviving are his wife Grace (Cope) Gunterman; 3 sons, John of Chicago, Robert, Caseyville, and Wesley, Charleston, SC; 10 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren; 1 Brother Raymond Gunterman, Hardin and Rachel Mckinney of Jerseyville. His parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters, preceded him in death.
Claude Leroy Cope
Claude Leroy Cope was born in 1-25-1910 in Galesburg, Knox Co., IL, and died in 1-5-1971. He is buried in Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He was a son of Claude Leroy Cope and Dollie May Brown. He married James and Elizabeth (Kraushaar) Tucker's daughter Jessie S. Tucker. She was born in 1911 and died in 1971. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. She married Claude L. Cope 3-14-1928. Claude and Jessie (Tucker) Cope had these children-Nellie Marrie Cope, Doly Elizabeth Cope, Doris Jean Cope, Forest Gail Cope, Keith Cordile Cope, LeRoy Cope, and Rethal Fern Cope.
(Note: Claude L. Cope's wife Jessie (Tucker) Cope's mother Elizabeth (Kraushaar) Tucker was my mother Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall's cousin. Her father Joseph Kraushaar was my mother's uncle, and a brother to my mother's father Charles Kraushaar.)

Keith Cordile Cope's obituary - Keith C. Cope, 52, of Warren, Mich., formerly of the Fieldon area, died at 8:31 a.m. Saturday at Veteran's Administration Hospital in Allen Park, Mich. He was a master electrician and served in the U.S. Air Force. Born in Illinois, he was a son of the late Claude and Jessie (Tucker) Cope. Surviving are a son, Robert K of Mattoon; two daughters, Cindy Negri of Great Falls, Mont., and Susan Chauvan of West Virginia Beach, Va., seven grandchildren; two brothers; and four sister. Memorial services were held Monday at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home in Utica, Mich., Local memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hardin Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the Kidney Foundation.

Bessie M. (Cope) Jaggers
Bessie M. (Cope) Jaggers, 89, died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Feb. 9, 1911, in Nutwood to the late Rolin and Lula (Ninesinger) Cope. A resident of Nutwood all her life, she owned and operated the Nutwood Grocery Store for 38 years before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Edgar Mallett and George Fisk. In 1961, she married Elbert "Buddy" Jaggers. He survives. Also surviving are cousins. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of services at 3 p.m. Sunday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with the Rev. Wilbur Cain officiating. Burial will follow in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given in her name to the Rosedale/Nutwood Fire Department.

Bessie M. (Cope) Jaggers's husband - Elbert Wilson "Buddy" Jaggers, 89, died at 7:18 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Kentucky. He and the former Bessie Cope were married nearly 40 years. She died Sept. 14, 2000. He was a master mechanic at a Buick garage in Alton before he and his wife owned and operated a grocery store in Nutwood.
Surviving are his close friends, Gene and Peggy Ridenbark, and their families, all of the Nutwood area. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ola, Leva and Mary. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. Friday until time of services at 11:30 a.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Wilbur Cain will officiate. Burial will follow in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Nutwood/Rosedale Fire Department.

(1aaa) Harold F. and Addie (Johnson) Wadlow's son Robert Pershing Wadlow was born February 22, 1918 on Monroe Street in Alton, Madison Co., IL. He died 15th of July, 1940 in Manistee, Michigan. His weight was 490 pounds, his height was 8' 11.1". He was buried July 19, 1940 in Upper Alton Cemetery, Alton, Madison Co., IL. His height of 8' 11.1" qualifies him as the tallest person in history, as recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. At the time of his death he weighed 490 pounds. Robert was born on February 22, 1918, and weighed a normal eight pounds, six ounces. He drew attention to himself when at six months old, he weighed 30 pounds. A year later at 18 months, he weighed 62 pounds. He continued to grow at an astounding rate, reaching six feet, two inches and 195 pounds by the time he was eight years old. Between 1920 and 1926 the family lived in Roxana, IL.
His middle name, Pershing, was in honor of the World War I General Pershing, then commanding officer of the European conflict. Robert was the first born of Addie and Harold Wadlow. Later the Wadlow family grew with the addition of two sisters, Helen and Betty, and two brothers, Eugene and Harold Jr. Despite Robert's size, all of his family members were of normal height and weight.
Trying to maintain a normal life, Robert enjoyed collecting stamps, photography, and become the world's tallest Boy Scout at seven feet, four inches, when he was 13 years of age. Later he became a member of DeMolay and the Masons. At age 18, he had reached eight feet, four inches tall, and weighed 390 pounds. His clothing required three times the normal amount of cloth, and his size 37 shoes cost $100.00 a pair (a lot of money back in the 1930's). Two years later his shoes were provided free by the International Shoe Company. When he turned 20 Robert traveled for the shoe company, visiting over 800 towns and 41 states. His father had to modify the family car, removing the front passenger seat so Robert could sit in the back seat and stretch out his long legs. The father and son team traveled over 300,000 miles on their goodwill tour for the shoe company.
He established his place in the history books when he exceeded eight feet, four inches in 1937, surpassing the record previously held by an Irishman who died in 1877. Robert was very fond of his mother Addie, and there was a quiet manner about him that earned him the title 'Gentle Giant'. Robert's unique size was attributed to an over active pituary gland, which produced much higher than normal levels of growth hormone. Today's medical science can compensate for such problems - but in the 1920s there was no therapy available. As a youth, Robert had enjoyed good health, but his large feet had troubled him for many years. He had little sensation in his feet and did not feel any chafing until blisters formed. While making an appearance in Manistee, Michigan in July 1940, a fatal infection set in when such a blister formed. On July 4th, doctors had Robert confined to a hotel bed, unable to find suitable accommodations at the local hospital. Days later, after emergency surgery and blood transfusions, the infection lingered and his temperature continued to rise. At 1:30 a.m., on the 15th of July, Robert Wadlow passed away in his sleep. Robert's body was brought back to his home town of Alton for burial. The 1,000-pound casket required a dozen pallbearers, assisted by eight other men. Out of respect for Alton's Gentle Giant, all city businesses closed for the funeral. Over 40,000 people signed the guest register. Robert's gravestone simply reads "At Rest."
Robert Wadlow holds a special place in Alton's history. He is remembered as a quiet young man who overcame a unique handicap, and who was an inspiration to all of those that knew him. In 1984 a citizens committee organized efforts to immortalize Robert, and in 1985 a bronze statue was erected on the campus of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine on College Avenue in Alton IL.

On July 4, 1940, while making a professional appearance at the National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep. He was 22. An estimated 40,000 people attended Wadlow's funeral on July 19. He was buried in a half-ton coffin that required twelve pallbearers to carry, which was interred within a vault of solid concrete. It was believed that Wadlow's family were concerned for the sanctity of his body after his death, and went to these lengths of security to ensure it would never be disturbed or stolen. In 1985, a life-size bronze statue of Wadlow by Ned Giberson was erected at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine. He is featured in film and with a wax replica in the Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museum in Saint Augustine, Florida; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Niagara Falls, Ontario; Gold Coast, Queensland; and Guadalajara, Mexico.
