He moved to Ohio and enlisted in army with his brother, Nicholas Goshorn in Co. F 931 Reg. Ohio Inf. Vol. Discharged June 19, 1865. Nicholas was killed in service. William came to Jersey county and wed Antonette (Wheaton) Goshorn. They were parents of 7 children. They were married on the 21 day of Jan. 1867 in Jerseyville, Ill. by Rev. C. H. Menton.�Antoinetta Goshorn was born in Winneburg, Ger. on the 18th day of Feb. 1841. She came with her parents to the U. S. at the age of 5 yrs.�She died at her home in Fieldon, Ill. July 7, 1926. She is buried in Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. Her father Joseph Witten was born in Winneburg, Germany. He died in Carrolton, Ill. Her mother Marie (Witten) Lappa, Hankey was born in Winneburg, Germany in 1809, and�died at her home 1-1/2 miles west of Fieldon, Ill. on the 10 day of May 1893. William Goshorn served in the civil war 3 yrs (was Leutenant), wounded twice - once in leg above knee, once in finger. William Goshorn's father James Goshorn was born in the State of Penn on 22nd day of Mar. 1803. He died at his home, Hamilton, Ohio, on the 8th day of Mar. 1875. James Goshorn married Nancy Doran. She was born in the State of Penn. on the 4th day of July 1808.�She died at their home in Hamilton, Ohio on the 12th day of Sept. 1849.�William and Antoinette (Wheaton) Goshorn had 7 children-Nicholas Goshorn, Louis Goshorn, Sopha Goshorn, Mary Goshorn, Emaline Goshorn, William Goshorn, and Charles Doran Goshorn. She was born Oct. 24, 1932, in Jerseyville, the daughter of James and Kathern (Kraushaar) Goshorn, now deceased. She married Hugh Douglas Seibert Jan. 11, 1952, in Jerseyville, and the two enjoyed traveling extensively during their 51 years of marriage. He died July 25, 2006. She had worked at International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville in her youth, but after marriage she became a homemaker. Surviving are two special cousins, as well as caregivers, Jeris Ann Scoggins and Gerald Goshorn, both of Jerseyville, as well as additional cousins and family members. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two half sisters, Marjorie Greene and Hazel Clayton. She married George Devening 2-10-1903. They had a son Pearl Devening, born 9-30-1906 near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL and died 6-6-1968 on his farm near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL. He married Agnes Bernice Goshorn born 5-4-1908 in Bluffdale, IL, died 6-25-1974 at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, MO. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Gertrude (Combes) Goshorn. Pearl and Agnes (Goshorn) Devening had 3 children-Charles J. Devening of Tacoma, Wash, Lena Devening who married Henry Goeman of Fieldon, IL, and Joan Devening married Terry Irvin of Centralia, IL.) ---------------- (1aa) Pearl and Agnes Bernice (Goshorn) Devening's daughter Lena (Devening) Goeman's husband Henry Goeman's obituary - Henry Goeman, 89, died unexpectedly at 7:41 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at his residence. He was born March 7, 1917, in English Township, the son of Henry and Dora (Hetzel) Goeman. He married the former Lena G. Devening on Oct. 13, 1940, in Elsberry, Mo. They shared nearly 59 years together before her death on June 7, 1999. He was raised on the same farm he currently resided on and farmed his entire life, as well as operated Goeman Trucking. Agriculture was important to him, as he was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, Jersey County Fair Board for many years, serving as the tractor pull supervisor for 25 years, and an original organizer of the former Fieldon Booster Club. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis Frazer and Bernice and Ronald Guilander, all of Jerseyville; two grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda and Kerry Hall of Kane, Jeff and Donna Guilander of Jerseyville; five great-grandchildren, Kourtnee, Kurt and Khloee Hall, and Ronnie and Christopher Guilander. In addition to his wife, his parents; a son-in-law, George Frazer; and a sister, Catherine Briggs, preceded him in death. He died in 1958 in Jersey County, IL. He married Reohn or Reahn (I don't know her maiden name). Hubert Nicholas Goshorn and his wife Reohn Goshorn had a daughter Jeris Ann Goshorn who married Robert Scoggins, and a son Gerald Goshorn who married Sandra Crotchett, daughter of Arnold B. and Mabel Evelyn (Tucker) Crotchett. ------------- Hubert Nicholas Goshorn's obituary - Hubert Nicholas Goshorn, 43, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he, his wife, and his mother were taken following a gas heater explosion in his home in Jerseyville. Services were Sun. and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. ------------------- (1aa) Hubert Nicholas Goshorn and his wife Reohn Goshorn's daughter Jeris Ann (Goshorn) Scoggins and her husband Robert Scoggins's golden wedding anniversary - Robert and Jeris Ann Scoggins of Jerseyville celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday, June 6. He and the former Jeris Ann Goshorn were married June 6, 1959, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. The Rev. P.P. Heinen officiated. The couple is celebrating their anniversary with a family dinner at Tony's hosted by their children. The children are Lisa (Mark) Loftus and Angela Richards of Jerseyville. They are blessed with four grandchildren, Jordan and Paige Watson, Reahn Richards of Jerseyville and Bryan Loftus of Granite City.� Robert Scoggins is retired from Laclede Steel Company after 37 years of service. He continues to enjoy semi-retirement and works at Wolves Crossing Golf Course in his spare time. His survivors are his wife, Audrey Leah Peeler Akers whom he married Nov. 12, 1953 in Winchester; one son, James A. Akers, III, Fairmont City; three daughters, Dr. Linda Fischer of Springfield, Jayne Akers and Janet Story of Jerseyville; six brothers, Frank, Boston, Mass., Arthel, Keith and Delbert, Jerseyville, Nicholas, Shipman, Marvin, Bethalto; four grandchildren. ------------- James A. Akers Jr's wife Audrey Leah (Peeler) Akers Decker's obituary - Audrey Lee Decker, 76, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Sunset Point Rehabilitation Center in Clearwater. She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Hardin, one of three children born to the late Raymond and Kathryn (Johnston) Peeler. She married James Arnold Akers Jr. on Nov. 2, 1953, in Winchester. He died Sept. 19, 1981. She later married Wayne Eugene Decker on Aug. 6, 1982, at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville. He died Nov. 20, 2003. She was born and raised in Hardin. She was valedictorian of her high school graduating class. Several years after the birth of her fourth child, she attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she earned a master's degree in English literature. She taught classes at the college level and worked as a social worker for both the states of Illinois and Missouri. Audrey was also an accomplished as well as published author. Surviving are her four children and their spouses, Dr. Linda and Dr. Lewis Fischer of Waterloo, Jayne Prophetter and her husband, Henry, of Clearwater, James A. Akers III of Cottage Hills, and Janet Kimberly Story of Clearwater; her grandchildren, Tamara, Donovan, and Alexander Fischer, Kathryn and Gabriel Pizzo, Brandy, Jami, Jasmine, Justina, and Jalena Akers, Jarad and Jamie Story; her great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Damian, Aubrey, Autumn, Gage, Talyn, and Jaedrien; and a brother, Raymond Peeler. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Peeler. On May 6, 1950, in Jerseyville, she married Keith Akers. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Wannetta McBride of Jerseyville; a son, Leonard Akers of Jerseyville; three grandchildren; two brothers, George Talley of Fieldon and Charles Talley of Jerseyville; and seven sisters, Eileen Moore of Granite City, Armeda Dunham of McClusky, Lola Mae Dunham and Beatrice Ebker, both of Jerseyville, Frances Crumley and Delores Stone, both of Alton, and Wilma Griffin of Washington. A memorial service was July 5 in Church of the Nazarene in Jerseyville. A Memorial has been established to Missouri Epilepsy Foundation. Born June 27, 1929, in Pearl, he was a son of James Arnold and Myrtle (Goshorn) Akers. He grew up in the Fieldon area and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during both World War II and the Korean War. He spent most of his adult life working as a union carpenter, through Local 377 in Alton and after retirement, began working in the maintenance department at the former Life Care Nursing Home in Alton. After retirement, he was able to pursue some of his greatest passions in life, spending more time with his wife, as they spent many days fishing and camping in numerous spots in the area. He married the former Frances Pauline Cox on Dec. 2, 1948, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville, and they shared 54 years together before her death, after a battle with cancer, on Jan. 27, 2003. Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Akers of Labadie, Mo., Sharon Ohley of Jerseyville, and Nicki and Paul Summers of Godfrey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Tina Akers of Lexington, S.C., and the Rev. Robert and Michelle Akers of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Keith Akers of Jerseyville and Marvin Akers of Alton. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Frank, Arthur, James and Delbert Akers. They lived in Jerseyville, IL. --------------------- (1aaa) Marie (Goshorn) Heiderscheid's grandson Herbert Harrison Dierking's obituary - Herbert Harrison Dierking, 53, was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, near Elsah, concluding a 13-day search after he was reported missing while fishing on the Mississippi River on Oct. 18, 2008. He was born in Jerseyville on Nov. 15, 1954, the son of Forrest Harrison and Mildred Marie (Heiderscheid) Dierking. After the death of his parents when he was a young boy, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Dewey and Marie A. (Goshorn) Heiderscheid. He married the former Carla Cameron on Dec. 1, 1979, at Open Door House of Praise in Jerseyville. She survives. He grew up in Jerseyville and graduated from Jersey Community High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted with the U.S. Army. He worked for the state of Illinois for 18 years, serving as a corrections officer for Pere Marquette Boys Camp in Grafton for nine years, four years at the Jacksonville Correctional Center and for the past five years had been employed with the Greene County Work Camp in White Hall. His job was a necessity; fishing was his love. His love of fishing and the river began at a very young age and continued to grow stronger as he grew older. If he had free time, he was on the river. He owned and operated Herb's Bait and Tackle Shop on East Carpenter Street in Jerseyville for many years and was a commercial fisherman, providing fish for many organizations and churches, including Charity Christian Center in Jerseyville, where he was a member. He loved to be around people and was a member of The Disciples, a bowling team that competed in a league at Bowl Haven in Godfrey on Monday nights, and the Wild Riders Saddle Club, which incorporated his, and his family's, love of horses. They met every other Saturday night for horse shows during the spring, summer and fall. In addition to his wife, surviving are their four children and their spouses, David and Barb Dierking of Medora, Daniel and Tonya Dierking of Brighton, Diane Dierking at home and Donna and Joshua Curren of Groton, Conn.; four grandchildren, Clayton, Jaelynn and Emily Dierking and Gracie Ann Curren; and his mother-in-law, Lois Cameron of Shipman. N.W. of Fieldon, Ill. on the 12 day of Nov. 1884. John E. Hetzel John E. Hetzel, one of the most prosperous and influential of the German citizens of English township, was born May 23, 1826 in Germany, his parents being Conrad and Josephine (Schabel) Hetzel, also natives of Germany. In 1849 John Hetzel immigrated to the United States, taking passage on board a sailing vessel, the Graftstroom, at Rotterdam. He landed in New York, and from there went to Milwaukee, Wis. He had, previous to coming to America, learned the machinist's trade, working upon locomotives and other machinery. He also did military service in that country two years. In 1855 he came to Jersey county and settled on Otter creek, where he remained one year, then removed to section 18, English township, where he purchase 40 acres of land. He now owns 320 acres in this section, which is mostly under cultivation. In 1881 he erected a handsome and commodious residence, costing $3,000. His other improvements are of a corresponding description, and everything about the place indicates thrift and prosperity. Mr. Hetzel was married in March 1851 to Henrietta Auspach, daughter of David and Mary (Reedy) Auspach. He was born March 7, 1917, in English Township, the son of Henry and Dora (Hetzel) Goeman. He married the former Lena G. Devening on Oct. 13, 1940, in Elsberry, Mo. They shared nearly 59 years together before her death on June 7, 1999. He was raised on the same farm he currently resided on and farmed his entire life, as well as operated Goeman Trucking. Agriculture was important to him, as he was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, Jersey County Fair Board for many years, serving as the tractor pull supervisor for 25 years, and an original organizer of the former Fieldon Booster Club. He was born in Jerseyville on Dec. 15, 1944, the only child born to Pauline (Hetzel) Whitlock of Jerseyville and the late George Whitlock. After graduating in 1962 from Jersey Community High School, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years during the Vietnam War. Soon after returning home, he married the former Doris Nairn of Grafton, at the United Methodist Church in Grafton, on Feb. 17, 1968. She survives. He spent most of his adult life employed at Owens-Illinois Glass factory in Alton, attaining the position of mechanical repairman, before the plant closed. Afterwards, he dabbled in television repair work in the Grafton area. In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include two children, Andy Lee Whitlock of Grafton and Amanda Marie Whitlock of Alton; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Besides his father, his mother and father-in-law, John and Edith Nairn, preceded him in death. A US Navy World War II veteran, Mottaz retired in 1983 as a switchman from General Telephone Co., after 37 years of service, and was a volunteer at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Jerseyville on February 20, 1920, he was the son of the late William L. and May (Hempstead) Mottaz. He married the former Tessie Hetzel on November 15, 1941, in St. Charles, Missouri and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Lonnie Mottaz of Jerseyville; two daughters, Debbie Parker of Wood River and Deanna Gowin of Marietta, Georgia; and three grandchildren. She was born Jan. 16, 1947, in Alton, the daughter of Paul and Tessie (Hetzel) Mottaz. A 1965 graduate of Jersey Community High School, she married Larry Miller on April 10, 1995. . She was a graduate with a BS in English from SIUE, licensed real estate agent in Georgia and a Lifetime Top Sales Professional. She started her career with American Express in St. Louis and was promoted and assigned to various locations throughout the U.S. and won many awards with them. She also worked with BellSouth as a sales executive and achieved top sales. The last few years of her life were spent as entrepreneur with eBay, and she had her own eBay store and was quite successful. For recreation she was highly dedicated in tennis for many years in the Atlanta area with ALTA and USTA Organizations. She won various awards but was most proud of winning her city championship in her division with ALTA in 2010. Deanna also loved to travel and traveled with her husband, Larry, throughout the world. She is survived by her husband, Larry Miller, Canton; mother, Tessie Mottaz of Jerseyville; brother, Lonnie Mottaz and his wife, Anne, of Jerseyville; sister, Debbie Mottaz and her husband, Alan Masterson, of Fosterburg; along with nieces, Sara and Rebecca; and a nephew, Steve. N.W. of Fieldon, Ill., Jersey Co., Ill. on the 29th day of July 1896. ���� "He started farming in 1896 on his place 1/2 Mi. N. and 2 Mi. Crawford"� (Sopha Goshorn, probably 1954 during visit to Anacortes, Washington).�She also wrote names and dates for their children and the Goshorn and Hetzel siblings.�I can write these in a future e-mail if you like. ���� Joan (Hetzel) Thompson�had some family lore that jived with the family lore that I had heard.� She stated that the first John Hetzel (Sopha's father-in-law) left Germany because of a tradition that the oldest son got the estate and the second son was expected to become a priest.�He was the second son and did not want to become a priest! I am not sure that the tradition I had heard stated that it was the "second" son but whatever son was to become priest, John was it! My grandfather, Clarence Hetzel, married my grandmother, Evelyn Grace Wenner, on 12 September 1932 in Thunder Hawk, Corson County, South Dakota.� They made their home at "the Feddler place" which was just a little south and east of the John and Sopha (Goshorn) Hetzel and Ed Wheaton (son of Anton Wheaton of Fieldon)�homesteads in Corson County.� In search of work they left South Dakota in 1938 and joined her brother, Dean Wenner, in Mount Vernon, Washington.�Early in 1939 they moved east across the mountains to Okanogan, Washington where the extended Wenner relations had moved in 1908. -----�Both daughters were born at Elsie MacDonald's Nursing Home in Okanogan:�Mary Evelyn on 21 April 1939 and Margaret Ellen on 23 July 1940.�Late in 1940 the family moved back west across the mountains to Anacortes, Washington�where Clarence and his brother-in-law, Dean Wenner, joined the Anacortes Veneer cooperative (from which they both retired).�Clarence purchased a small old house on four 30' x 100' lots in Anacortes in October 1941 (for $1500 and $100 down) at 1015 "E" Avenue (now 2020 11th Street) and built a new house�(2016 11th) in 1964 on the east two lots, paneled throughout with fine paneling from the Veneer.�Here he died of prostate cancer on 22 March 1989.�He and Evelyn are buried at Fernhill Cemetery near Anacortes. ----- Mary and Margaret both graduated from Anacortes High School, Mary in 1956 (salutatorian) and Margaret in 1958.�They both graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Mary in 1960 and Margaret in 1962.�They both became elementary school music teachers:�Mary at Sandy, Oregon from 1960 to 1964 and Margaret at Estacada, Oregon from 1962 to 1969.�Mary received her master's degree at Lewis and Clark in 1962.�In 1964 she found a better paying position in the Anacortes schools and worked from 1964 to 1967 when she retired to raise a family. ----- Margaret married Art Kennedy April 27, 1963. She had three step-children: Joe, Duane, and Laura Kennedy.�They had Edward James Kennedy on 2 January 1965.�They moved to Poulsbo in 1969 where Margaret briefly continued teaching elementary music until a school levy failed.�She then taught sixth grade until she retired in 1995.�She got her masters from Western Washington University in Summer 1992. ------ Mary married Rex Hartsfield on 24 June 1966 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Anacortes.�My brother and I were born at Oak Harbor, Washington at NAS Whidbey at the old base hospital on the seaplane base, I, Eric James Hartsfield,�on 1 December 1967, and he, Carl Rex Hartsfield, on 9 August 1969.�The family home was in Anacortes at 3322 W 3rd Street from 1966 to the summer of 1970 when my parents purchased the home at 2020 11th Street that my grandparents had sold in 1964.�From 1970 through January 1979,�we lived next door to my grandparents. My father retired from the Navy and we moved to Pinellas County, Florida where I graduated high school in 1986 and my brother in 1987. I started college at the University of Tennessee in the Fall of 1986 and my brother started at Georgia Tech in the Fall of 1987.�In November of 1987 my parents moved to Fayetteville, Tennessee.�My father worked for four different defense companies in nearby Huntsville, Alabama between 1987 and 1990 (a bad time to be in the defense industry), and then returned to Anacortes, Washington in the Fall of 1990.�------ My brother graduated from Georgia Tech in August 1991 and I graduated from the University of Tennessee in December 1991.�Carl was Air Force ROTC�at Georgia Tech and was called to active duty in the�Summer of 1992 and is just now moving (with a wife and two daughters, 18 and 12, to Dayton, Ohio where he will be teaching at the Air Force Institute.�I was hired by the State of Washington, Department of Transportation in the Seattle area in March 1993 and currently help put together highway contract plans.�Our father retired the last time in the late 1990s. In 2001 my parents, Grandma Hetzel, and Aunt Margaret moved to my dad's hometown of Columbia, Tennessee.�My grandmother died there in 2004.�My parents and my aunt put their homes on the market in June 2008.�My aunt's sold in two days.
