John George Haushalter

My great grandfather on my mother*s side was John George Haushalter (or George John Haushalter) born in 7-12-1842 in Missouri. He died in 9-22-1881 on his farm near Fieldon, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He is buried in the Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He was married to Margaret Schiller born in 1844 in Bavaria, Germany. She died in 4-12-1926 in Jerseyville, IL. She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. They got married in 1866. John George Haushalter*s parents were born in France. John George Haushalter*s parents were Johann Georg Haushalter Sr. (John George Haushalter Sr. or George Haushalter Sr.) born 3-22-1808 in France, died 6-18-1884 in Jersey Co., IL, and Eva Magdalena/Madeleine (maiden name unknown). His 2nd wife Catherine "Kate" (maiden name unknown) was born 6-1-1816 in France, and died 1-11-1900 in Jersey Co., IL. Both he and his 2nd wife were buried in the Fieldon Cemetery, Jersey County, IL.

My great great grandfather John George Haushalter Sr*s 1st wife, from information I received which is not yet proven or verified, was possibly Eva Magdalena/Madeleine (maiden name unknown), born in France. John George Haushalter Sr. and his 1st wife Eva Magdalena/Madeleine (maiden name unknown) had these children-Martin Haushalter born in 1831 in France, married Anna M. Wilkins; Frederick S. Haushalter born in 1837 in MO, married Louisa Lindemann; John George Haushalter (my great grandfather) born in 1842 in MO, married Margaret Schiller; and George F. Haushalter born in 1844 in MO, married Sophia Whitten/Wheaton.

(Note: I received information which is not yet proven or verified, that John George Haushalter Sr. (my great great grandfather) was possibly a son of George/Jean "Martin" Haushalter and Marie "Margaretha/Marguerite" (Sturm) Haushalter who lived inNiederbetschdorf (Betschdorf), Elsass, France in the 1700*s, and a possible descendant of Sabastian Haushalter who was recorded as living in that area of France as far back as the 1600*s. Both my great great grandfather Johann Georg Haushalter Sr. (John George Haushalter Sr.) and his son, my great grandfather John George Haushalter, were sometimes referred to by the first name of George.)

The 1870 Federal Census for Jersey County showed Haushalters lived in Richwood Township in the Fieldon area at that time. Early land records show that a George Haushalter owned land in Jersey County, IL as early as 1854. There is a Haushalter Hollow and a Haushalter Creek north of Fieldon in Jersey County, IL named after the Haushalter families who once lived there. The name is misspelled Householder and Hausholter in some of the old census and other old records. There are discrepancies in the information I found from census and other records regarding the name of my great-grandfather Haushalter. Some census and cemetery records show his name as John George Haushalter and other records show his name as George John Haushalter. The obituary for my great grandmother Margaret Meyer below has his name as George. She had remarried to George Meyer after her first husband my great grandfather John George Haushalter died in 1881.

From early childhood she attended the public school of Jerseyville, and graduated with honor from that institution, in the class of 1889. Those who attended the commencement exercises of that class, will remember Miss Sharp as the brilliant class poetess. She was possessed of a very quiet byr most affectionate disposition, but was always very firm in her decision between right and wrong; so that only when a child she gave her heart to the Savior*s keeping and has ever since lived a consistent and useful Christian life. For about twenty years she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

She was joined in marriage to Murray V. Corzine, Oct. 21, 1891. Two children were born to them; Ruby and Chalmer, who with their father survive to mourn the loss of this dear wife and most affectionate mother. About one and a half years ago, Mrs. Corzine took upon herself the care of three invalid relatives; her aged grandmother, her mother and her great aunt. With these three to wait upon and her house-hold duties to perform, hers was a very busy life. Last February, her dear old grandmother was called home and only a short time ago, her mother was also laid to rest beside the grandmother. Shortly after her mother*s death, she too was taken ill and although her dear ones did all that could be done to bring about her recovery, she was taken from them. The roil and care of this life were finished and she was called home at 7:40 a.m. Nov. 1, 1906. She leaves a host of sorrowing friends and relatives who will sadly miss her cheerful presence.
