Johannes John Wesley Westfall
Johannes John Wesley Westfall, a son of Abel and Annetje (Bogaert) Westfall, was born in Kingston, NY October 23, 1724 and died in Hardy County VA in 1789. His will was proven in Hardy County April 13, 1789. He married a widow, Sarah (Vannoy) Hornbeck.�Sarah, a daughter of Johannes and Janneker (Louw) Vannoy, was baptized in Kingston, NY February 6, 1732 and died in VA in 1792. She married Jonathan Hornbeck September 21, 1751. Jonathan died about 1755. They had a son Benjamin born in 1754. All Johannes and Sarah's children moved to Knox County Indiana and all died in that State.
Johannes John Wesley Westfall was the son of Abel and Antjen "Anna" (Bogaert) Westfall. His grandparents were Johannes and Marritje (Kool) Westfall, and his great grandfather was the original Westfall immigrant to America who came to America in 1642 from Holland, Jurian Westfall who married Maritje Hansen.

Abel and Antjen "Anna" (Bogaert) Westfall's son Johannes and Sarah (Vannoy) Hornbeck Westfall had 6 children-Abel Westfall, Cornelius Westfall, John Westfall Jr., Abraham Westfall, Jacob Westfall, and Isaac Westfall. John Wesley Westfall's sons Abel and Cornelius served in the Revolutionary war. Cornelius was a Lieutenant in his brother Captain Abel Westfall's Company, the 8th Virginia Regiment, and was at Valley Forge in 1777 and 1778. �
(1) Abel Westfall, a son of Johannes and Sarah (Vannoy) Westfall, was born about 1755 and died in 1814. Abel Westfall born 18 Nov 1755 in Hampshire (now Hardy) Co., WVA, and died in 1814 in Knox Co. IN Terr. (now Greene Co., IN. He married 1st Rachel Edwards abt. 1784, and married 2nd Mary "Polly" Ramsour. Abel served as recruiting office for the 8th VA Regiment in the American Revolution and was then a Company Captain.

Cornelius Westfall (l756-l828) was an Ensign and 2nd Lieutenant in his brother's, Captain Abel Westfall's Sixth Co. of the 8th Virginia Regimnet during the Revolutionary War. He also served at Valley Forge in l777-l778. His first wife was Anne Elizabeth Lambert Springstone (l754-l802), widow of Jacob Springstone. They were married in Harrison Co., Virginia on 4 April l787. Cornelius Westfall also settled in Ross Co., Ohio, along with his brother, Abel Westfall. From Ross Co., Ohio they went to Knox Co., Indiana where the rest of his brothers settled. His second wife was a widow, Sarah Runsoner Hale whom he married in Ross Co., Ohio on l2 January l804. On l8 May l8l8, Cornelius Westfall applied for a pension, S-36842 for his military service in the Revolutionary War. Although at the time of his settlement in Knox Co., Indiana, it later became Greene Co., Indiana where he died on 8 August l828. He his buried in the city cemetery in Bloomfield, Indiana next to his brother, Abel Westfall. A government stone marks his grave for his Revolutionary War service.

(5) Isaac Westfall, a son of Johannes and Sarah (Vannoy) Westfall, was born in 1762 and died in Owen County IN about 1830. (His estate was settled August 21, 1830 in Owen County.) He married Elizabeth Poage. Isaac was granted land in Randolph County Va in 1785.�He appeared on the tax rolls of Hardy County VA beginning in 1789. He purchased two tracts of land in Pendleton County VA August 5, 1793. A commission reportedly met with Elizabeth March 14, 1797 to obtain her dower release for the land. This indicates that Isaac was deceased before this date. However, Isaac's estate was transferred in Owen County in August 21, 1830.

(1aa) Abraham and Sarah (Rumsour) Westfall's son Edward Dixon Westfall was born December 22, 1820 in Knox County, Indiana, and died June 12, 1897, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. He married Josephune Susan Dillon June 5, 1881 in Bexar County, Texas. They had no children. Edward Dixon Westfall Came to Texas in 1845 and to San Antonio in 1846. He was an early settler of Zavala County, Texas and a Texas Ranger. He came to Texas in 1845, and moved from Hopkins County, Texas, to San Antonio in 1845 or 1846. He also served in The Mexican War. He joined the company of Capt. John Conner in Col. Peter Hansbrough Bell's regiment. Later he served in Capt. William G. Crump's company. After the war in 1848 he built a cabin on the Leona River, seven miles south of the site of present day Batesville in east central Zavala County. He is believed to be the first settler in the area of Zavala County.

WESTFALL, EDWARD DIXON (1820-1897)
Edward Dixon Westfall, early settler of Zavala County and Texas Ranger, was born on December 22, 1820, in Knox County, Indiana. His father, Abraham, moved the family to Jasper County, Illinois, in 1841. Edward Westfall left Illinois in 1843 to go to Missouri, intending to join a wagon train to Oregon. Instead he traveled and held various jobs until he came to Texas in 1845. Westfall moved from Hopkins County, Texas, to San Antonio in 1845 or 1846. The Mexican War had broken out, and he joined the company of Capt. John Conner in Col. Peter Hansbrough Bell's regiment. Later he served in Capt. William G. Crump's company.
After the war in 1848 Westfall built a cabin on the Leona River, seven miles south of the site of present-day Batesville in east central Zavala County. Westfall is believed to be the first settler in the area of Zavala County. He spent the next twenty-nine years in that vicinity, farming under the constant threat of Indian raids and serving as a guide for settlers, rangers, and soldiers with his good friends William A. A. (Bigfoot) Wallace and Henry Robinson. He was a stage guard when Wallace had the contract to carry mail to El Paso. When Wallace was commissioned by Governor Bell to raise a company of rangers for frontier defense, Westfall was one of his lieutenants.
Westfall returned to his cabin after his service under Wallace sometime in 1855 and was severely wounded in an Indian attack; his dog "George Washington" died of a lance wound defending his master. During the Civil War Westfall moved his livestock to the Nueces Canyon near Camp Wood; in 1874 he moved to Bexar County, where he farmed on Calaveras Creek about sixteen miles from San Antonio. Westfall moved back to San Antonio in 1877. He married Josephine Susan Dillon in 1881.
Westfall's journals, which he kept from 1886 to his death in 1897, reveal that he was a man who loved to read, although he had little formal education. When he died of fever on June 12, 1897, he left his estate to his wife and stipulated that after her death it was to be applied to the establishment of a free public library in San Antonio, or if one were already established, it was to be used for improving existing service. By the time Mrs. Westfall died, on January 4, 1940, San Antonio had a public library system, and in June 1963 the Westfall Branch Library, built partially with the proceeds from Westfall's estate and partially from city funds, was opened. Both Westfall and his wife were buried at Elmendorf. The journals of Edward Dixon Westfall were on repository in the San Antonio Public Library in 1990.

� Edward Dixon Westfall was born 22 December 1820 in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana, the son of Abraham Westfall and Sarah Rumsour.�He had an adventuresome soul and in 1843 he left Indiana to join a wagon train in Missouri bound for Oregon.�Instead he traveled and held various jobs and ended up in Hopkins County, Texas in 1845. He moved from Hopkins County to San Antonio and after the Mexican War he moved to Zavala County and is believed to be the first settler there.�
Edward was a guide, a stagecoach guard, an Indian Fighter, fought in the Mexican War, and a lieutenant in the Texas Rangers under A. A. "Bigfoot" Wallace.� Westfall along with Bigfoot Wallace traveled through Monahans guarding the stagecoach on its way to El Paso and both were well known scouts for south and west Texas. After the Mexican War he was severely wounded in an Indian fight at his cabin in Zavala County, Abel Westfall moved to Texas after this event to help his brother take care of his property during his recuperation.�
In 1874 Ed moved to Bexar County where he farmed on the Calaveras Creek near Elmendorf.� There he finally settled down in his sixties and married Josephine Susan Dillon. Abel went back to Indiana for a short time and then he moved his family to Texas and though Edward had no children his brother Abel's family has thrived here.
He had a very open view on church, he loved to go and listen to church services whenever the circuit preachers came around.�The denomination did not matter though Edward preferred sermons base on following God's ways for the love of God, he firmly did not believe you should practice religion because of fear of damnation.�In his journeys there was a comment he made that was rather interesting.� He stated, "I do not understand what it is about wash day that takes a perfectly even tempered women and makes her grumpy, plum to the point that a man doesn't come home for supper and dinner is always late." Edward walked to town everyday to get the newspapers, he loved knowing what was going on in the area and country, he mentions in a few entries his displeasure when the did not arrive on time and he went home empty handed.
Before his death he wrote his will leaving his entire estate to the city of San Antonio, after the death of his wife.�The proceeds were to go to building a public library, with the stipulation that there be a reading room for black people.� If at the time of his wife's death a library was already build, then the proceeds were to go for improvements.�His wife was thirty-seven years younger than her husband, so for the forty-three years she lived after her husband she lived off of his pensions from the Mexican War and Indian War. At the time of her death his estate went for around $50,000. The City of San Antonio used the money toward a branch library and named it the Westfall Branch Library.�A picture of Edward Westfall hangs on the wall in the library reminding us of his generosity.
He died in 1897 at the age of 76 on his farm and was referred to by his wife as "a loving, caring husband that would be sorely missed."� He left no descendants, but his brother Abel's family has thrived in Texas and are very proud of the contributions that Edward made to Texas during his life.

Marinus Van Aken was born about 1660 in Holland. Marinus Van Aken was a son of Cornelius Van Aken and Coppins Galaertje who were married July 21, 1652 in Cadzand, Holland. Marinus Van Aken was a grandson of Pieter Van Aken born in Thielt, Belgium, died 1680 in Niewvliet, Zeeland, Holland. Marinus Van Aken's first wife Prijntje Rents widowed him. He married Pieternelle de Pre van Wingen April 11, 1683 in Cadzand, Holland. They later emigrated to America. Marinus Van Aken emigrated from Cadzand, Holland about 1683 with his wife Pieternelle. Marinus's ancestors are thought to have emigrated from the ancient city of Aken, now more generally called Aix La-Chappelle or Aachen, from whence the name of the family of Van Akens and Van Aukens in America is taken. The name Achen is evidently derived from the springs for which the place has always been famous, and was the burial place of Charlemagne, the great German Emperor. Van Aachen or Aken simply describes a person 'as of or from' Aachen, of whom there were many of no relationship whatever, the place of primary residence becoming their proper name. Aken represents Dutch long sound of a, as does also Auken. In Holland the family name is traced back fifteen hundred years to the forth century when John Van Aken founded the ancient city of "Aken", located in Germany between the Rhine and Meuse rivers on the border of Holland. Marinus and Pieternelle emigrated to America and resided in Ulster County, around 1683, in the town of Esopus. They later resided in Rochester (Accord, NY). Their farm near Kingston is said to be still in the possession of their descendants. Marinus died sometime prior to 1724 in Rochester, Ulster Co., New York. Marinus had four sons and four daughters. Three boys eventually moved down the Old Mine Trail to the Delaware Valley and settled near Port Jervis then known as Mahockamack. Before we move on to the Delaware Valley I'd like to talk about the spelling of our name. Although the name has been spelled primarily Van Aken or Van Auken in my direct line, Abraham Van Auken (1791) offers an interesting observation in that "It is an unpleasant fact that we of our family are not at all agreed upon the manner of spelling our name. It is spelled Van Auken, Van Aaaken, Van Aken and even sometimes Van Aker by men from the same ancestor.
"An account of the Van Auken family history requires acquaintance with what is known as 'The Old Mine Road'. Travel through many of the lands of early America was made difficult by thick woods, mountain barriers, and by hostile Indians. 'when Col. Nicholls took possession of New Amsterdam for England in 1664, the entire country west of the Hudson River, including the territory of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, was still the hunting ground of the Indians. There were only three settlements of the white man west of the Hudson; Fort Orange or Albany, Esopus or Kingston, and the village of Bergen in New Jersey." "This was the nature of the land to which Marinus Van Aken came just prior to 1685 and settled in Esopus. With one exception, travel was largely restricted to waterways which, in this case, was mainly the Hudson River. The exception was the Old Mine road, '...originally an Indian path from the Esopus country to the Delaware River.' " Descendants of Marinus would later move up the Hudson to the Albany area, across the River to the Rhinebeck region, stay near Esopus, or move southwest along the Old Mine road to settle along the banks of the Neversink and Delaware Rivers."
"Marinus moved on it from Esopus to Rochester, now called Accord, in Ulster County, N.Y. In quest of land, his four sons all moved down the road into the Neversink and Minisink valleys. Son Pieter settled in Lehman Twp., Pike County: Isaak crossed the Delaware river to put down roots in Montaque; and Abraham moved farther down the road, both of these being in what was finally determined as being in Sussex County, New Jersey." Hannah Van Aken died Feb 13th, 1891 in Oneida, Illinois. Hannah Van Aken was buried with the surname Armstrong. Pieter Quackenbosch was born about 1614 in Oestgeest, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, the founder of Quackenbush family in America. He was a brick maker in Albany, New York. Also known as Pieter Quackenbosch, Pieter Bont and sometimes as Pieter (or Piet) Bout. He probably left Holland for New Netherland in May of 1653 aboard the ship Graft. He came with his wife Maritje, son Johannes, born about 1642, son Wouter, born about 1644, son Reynier, born about 1652, daughter Maritje, born about 1640, and daughter Nelletje, born about 1650. Three more children born in Albany were daughter Annetje, born about. 1658, daughter Magdalena, born about 1660, and daughter Jannetje, born about 1663. There were several Reyniers in the third generation, as the original Reynier's sons named their sons Reynier after their father. Pieter Quackenbosch married Maritje Ariensz on 23 Mar 1639 in Koudekerk,, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. He died Abt 1662, Albany, Albany Co., New York, at age 48. He married Hannah Hoes on 21 Feb 1807 in Catskill, Greene, New York, daughter of Johannes Hoes and Marytje Quackenbosch.

His father, Abraham Van Buren (1737 - 1817) was a farmer, the owner of a handful of slaves, and a tavern-keeper in Kinderhook. Abraham Van Buren supported the American Revolution and later the Jeffersonian Republicans. He died while Martin Van Buren was a New York state senator. Martin Van Buren's mother, Maria Hoes Van Alen Van Buren (1747 - 1818), was of Dutch ancestry. Her first husband, Johannes Van Alen, died and left her with three children. In 1776, she married Abraham Van Buren. She never got over the loss of her second husband in 1817 and died less than a year after burying him.
By his mother's first marriage, Van Buren had one half-sister and two half-brothers, including James Van Alen, who practiced law with Van Buren for a time and served as a Federalist member of Congress (1807 - 1809). Van Buren had four full siblings from his parents' marriage: Dirckie "Derike" Van Buren (1777 - 1865), Jannetje "Hannah" Van Buren (born 1780), Lawrence Van Buren (1786 - 1868), who served as an officer in the New York militia during the War of 1812 and later was active in the Barnburners New York Democrats opposed to slavery, and Abraham Van Buren (1788 - 1836). Van Buren was the first president born a citizen of the United States, as all previous presidents were born before the American Revolution. His great-great-great-great-grandfather Cornelis had come to the New World in 1631 from the Netherlands. Van Buren received a basic education at a dreary, poorly lit schoolhouse in his native village and later studied Latin briefly at the Kinderhook Academy. He excelled in composition and speaking. His formal education ended before he reached 14, when he began studying law at the office of Francis Sylvester, a prominent Federalist attorney in Kinderhook. After six years under Sylvester, he spent a final year of apprenticeship in the New York City office of William P. Van Ness, a political lieutenant of Aaron Burr. Van Buren was admitted to the bar in 1803. Van Buren married Hannah Hoes, his childhood sweetheart and distant relative on February 21, 1807, in Catskill, New York. Like Van Buren, she was raised in a Dutch home and never lost her distinct Dutch accent. After 12 years of marriage, Hannah Van Buren contracted tuberculosis and died on February 5, 1819, at the age of 35. Martin Van Buren never remarried.)

While he was President he was given two tiger cubs by the Sultan of Oman. Martin Van Buren took $100,000, the sum of his salary as president for 4 years, in a lump sum at the end of his term. Martin Van Buren was defeated in the primary in 1844 by James Polk. President Van Buren's autobiography does not mention his wife once. He lived to see eight Presidents from eight different states succeed him. Martin Van Buren died in Kiderhook, New York (the same place he was born) on July 24, 1862. He was 79.)

(1a) Wouter Quackenbush, Jr. was born in 1671. He was the eldest son of Wouter and Neeltie Vandenbergh Quackenbush. He grew up at his father's brickyard located on the flats just north of the Albany stockade gate. In October 1696, he married Cornelia Bogert at the Albany Dutch church. By 1709, five children had been christened in the Albany church where Wouter, Jr. was a member and an occasional baptism sponsor. By 1697, his third ward house was configured on the Albany census. Two years later he joined his Albany neighbors in pledging allegiance to the king of England. Subsequent assessment rolls placed a modest value on his third ward property. He also was among the pioneer developers of Albany's lands at Schaghticoke. Wouter Quackenbush, Jr. filed a will in August 1711. It named his wife and five children as heirs. He died in November 1736 and was buried in Albany.
