Cleys Oem

Cleys Oem, was regeerder (translation: ruler, authority, or mayor) of city of Dordrecht, Holland. He Lived approx. 1230. He was a Member of the wethouderschap (translation: aldermen) in the time that the city with walls became reinforced. In 1058 it was knight Oem, ancestor of Cleys Oem, that Earl of the Netherlands recommended defend against an enemy, the Luikenaars, that attacked the city of Dordrecht.

Dordrecht was founded in 1008 by Count Theodore or Diederic (Dirk) III of the house of Frisia/Holland and was given city rights in 1015, it was the residence of the Counts of Holland until 1203 and was chartered in 1220 and fortified in 1271, it was the capital of Holland and the leading town during the 11th to the 17th century and one of the most prosperous medieval ports in the Netherlands, although severely damaged by the St. Elisabeth flood in 1421, Dordrecht stayed the leading city of Holland until it was surpassed as residence by The Hague in the 17th century, as seaport by Rotterdam in the 18th century and as Capital of the Netherlands by Amsterdam in the 19th century. Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in 1220, making it the oldest city in the historical region of Holland.

Cleys Oem married Catherina Gijssend Duyck. Child of Cleys Oem and Catherina Gijssend Duyck was-Cleys Claeysz Oem.

(Note: Cleys Oem was an ancestor of Marretje Jacobs Cool/Kool who married my gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. grandfather Johannes Jurian Westfall, son of Jurian and Maritje (Hansen Van Nordstrand) Westfall. Johannes' father Jurian Wesfall was the original Westfall emigrant to America in 1642.)

---------------

(Note: From - http://www.stamboomsurfpagina.nl/oem.html - Oem from Dordrecht - An old line uncle (in the past as Oem written), was patricirsfamilie in Dordrecht. The line Oem belongs undoubtedly to the oldest Dutch lines. In the year 1058 one finds this name already mentioned. And in a very renowned manner. The Luikenaars, as it happens, threatened the city Dordrecht with an attack. They had zo'n large supremacy, so that antagonism impossible scheen. It was knight Oem that earl of the Netherlands recommended the enemy within the city Dordrecht and waiting "around the city pit a mob to dig, by straw and green turfs covers, so that no hostile eye detects these zouden". These krijgslust succeeded completely; The nothing suspecting the Luikenaars fell in pits and by grafelijke the servants in large getalen was finished or was caught taken. Weapon Oem van Wijngaarden By this occurs the line Oem seems its thank weapon to this: The weapon with the green turfs was completed with a part of the Dutch lion from the weapon of the earl of the Netherlands, as a reward for this stratagem. Of the oldest Oem little has been further confessed. We start thus the tribe range with Claes Oem, regeerder of the city Dordrecht approximately 1230.)

(2) Cleys Claeysz Oem and Elizabeth Francks Von Dordt son Claes Claeysz Oem, died on 06-10-1345 at Stavoren. He was a Knight, and Lord of Dubbeldam, Schout (translation: Bailiff or Sheriff) of Dordecht. He accompanied Earl Willem IV on excursion to frieze country 1345 and sneuvelde at Stavoren. Claes Claesz Oem married Johanna VanArkel von Bokhoven, daughter of Jan Van Arkel II, and his 1st wife (name unknown), daughter of Jacobus Van Bokhoven. Claes died in 1345. Child of Claes Claesz and Johanna VanArkel von Bokhoven was-Gillis Claessen Oem.

(Note: Johanna VanArkel von Bokhoven was related to the Lords of Arkel. Between the 12th and 14th centuries Gorinchem, Holland and surroundings became the property of the Lords of Arkel. In 1267 they started to build a big castle on the east side of Gorinchem, close to the river Merwede. Johanna and the Lords of Arkel were descendants of Jan, the first owner of the land of Arkel, who came into the Netherlands under the leadership of Puppyn van Herstal, Duke of Brabant, in the service of Dagobert, King of the French, son of Lotharis, in 641 AD and 642 AD, and conquered the Frisians and Saxons and helped capture the strong Fortress of Wiltenburg, now Utrecht, and which King Dagobert gave van Arkel the use of and also gave him free ownership of a large tract of land situated between the rivers Lek and Waal, on the river de Linge, with everything belonging thereto (on which account Hoveus, Abbot of Egmont, in his chronicles, says that the Lords van Arkel, a whole century before the first Count Diderik's arrival, possessed a large part of Holland), where Jan van Arkel built a church upon the site *L'Art. Later was the mighty Foppo Van Arkel who died in 1008 AD, and who founded the village of Leerdam. This establishes our family ancestral lineage back more than 1400 years to 600 AD. Foppo Lord of Arkel was born 970 AD Arkel, Zuid Holland, and died 1008 AD Arkel, Zuid Holland. He married Heukelom and they had a son Jan I Lord of Arkel born abt. 990 AD, died 1034 AD. Jan II, lord of Arkel 1272 AD, succeeded his father 1272 AD, 'knape' until 1277 AD, knight 1281 AD, participated in the battle of Woeringen 5-6-1288 AD in the army of Brabant, lent money to count - He is a descendant of the first counts of Flanders and the lords of Arkel, a noble family in the medieval Netherlands. There were a number of the Lords of Arkel who took part in the Crusades to the Holy Land and were made Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and Teutonic Knights. In the 14th century the lords of Arkel fortified Gorinchem with brick town walls and towers. Most of the Royal Houses of Europe are connected to the Van Arkel pedigree through Jan Van Arkel (Count John XII of Arkel) and Johanna of Julich and Gelderland. Maria van Arkel (1380-1415) was the only daughter and heiress of Count John XII of Arkel and Johanna of Julich. She married John II (John of Egmond) in 1409 who was born in 1385 in Noord, Holland. )

(Note: Also note should be made to establish the identities of the two different men some past histories have clouded, Claes Claeys Oem who died June 10, 1345 at the battle at Stavern with Willhelm, and Nicholas Oem Van Arkle who died September 26, 1345 at the battle at Red Hill, Warms. Their identities became clouded possibly from a certificate that was found stating that Claes Claeys Oem and Bishop Jan Arkle were cousins. More research is needed? That Johanna Van Arkle was important to both of the men Claes and Nicholas may help unravel the mysteries.)

(Note: According to legend the Van Arkels were descendants of the ancient Trojans. The ancient Trojans or Troad (Greek Troias; "Land of Troy") was a district formed by the northwestern projection of Asia Minor into the Aegean Sea which is now located in modern Turkey. The major city of the Trojans was the legendary ancient city of Troy the site of the epic Trojan War between the Greeks and Trojans about 1200 BC, and Helen of Troy, and the famed Trojan Wooden Horse. Recent excavations have discovered that the city of Troy existed as far back as 2600 BC. If the legend of the Van Arkels being descendants of the Trojans is true then our ancestral lineage dates back as far as 2600 BC.)

(1a) Barent Jacobsen Cool and Marie Leendertse De Grauw's son Jacob Barentsen Cool born 1639 and in 1660 married Marretje Simons Schepmoes. Marritje was baptized 12 October 1632 in the Nieuwkerk (New Church), Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands to Sijmon Floriszen and Claertje Arents. She had four sisters, Lijsbet, Machtelt, Marij (who probably died young), and Jannetje, and three brothers, Floris, Arent (who probably died young), and Arent. She seems to have arrived from the Netherlands as an indentured servant to Pieter Pietersen Harder "in the city of New Amstel, on the South River". Evert Pels, the husband of her sister Jannetje (see the Evert Pels family), paid for the remainder of her indenture in 19 February 1659. The first of these deeds is dated Feb. 18, 1685, and the last is after 1700. In them he styles himself Leendert Kool, and calls his wife Mary. The deed show that his residence was at Marbletown in Ulster County, about seven miles from Kingston, but he attended church at thelatter place. In these deeds his name is spelled in several different ways, among which are found Coule and Colle, as well as Cool and Kool. "I may adhere that possibly Leendert Cool and Marretje Della, who were stated . . . to have had a son Cornelis baptized in New York, April 18, 1694, may have been Leendert Cool and Marretje Cornelis. If so, the wife's full name was Marretje Cornelis Della. Della appears, however, nowhere else in the many occurrences of her name." (5a) Barent Jacobsen Cool and Marretje Leendertse DeGrauw's son Theunis Barentszen Kool born Bef. 17 Aug 1653 in New Amsterdam. Christening: 17 Aug 1653 Dutchess, Reformed Church, New Amsterdam. Cole, Rev. , Isaac Kool (Cool or Cole) and Catharine Serven, New York: John F. Trow & Son (1876), p. 26: "Theunis married Marretje Gerrits (widow), Jan. 12, 1676. In the New York Record the husband is entered as Theunis Barentsen Kool. No children of this pair are found on New York or Kingston records. At a later period, I find one Theunis Kool at Kingston, his name having probably come from this Theunis. My impression is that Theunis Barentsen Kool was the ancestor of the line of "Kools" now existing in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, N.J. Very many Kools appear on the records of the Readington, N.J. Reformed Church, from its organization in 1719 till now. They have been very fond of the name Theunis and are known to be of the Holland Kools. No doubt this ancestor settled in that part of the country, as, after his marriage he cannot be found either in New York or Kingston." Baptismal and Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch Church of Kingston: Teunis Kool, widower of Marritje Gerrits, born in N. Jorck, and Willemje Langen, j.d., born under the jurisdicdtion of Kingston, both resid. in Kingstown. Banns published, but dates not given. 2 Married: 22 Nov 1696 in Kingston, New York. (Note: From - General notes: From "The Barent Jacobsen Cool Family," Richard H. Benson, Newbury Street Press, Boston, 2001 ----- Barent Jacobsen Cool sailed to New Amsterdam, possibly from Amsterdam asa sailor in late 1632 on the ship Soutberg, which arrived in April 1633 with 140 soldiers. At that time, New Amsterdam, now New York City, had apopulation of only 400 to 500 people. On June 8, 1633, he and six others signed a treaty with the Sickename Indians for purchasing land on the Connecticut River. The cost was recorded as 27 rolls of cloth, 6 axes, 6 kettles, 18 knives, and otherarticles. This was done to halt English exploration of the land. Barent's group also built a trading house called "The House of Good Hope" and fortified it with several cannons. Barent returned to Amsterdam by November 16, 1635. At that time, he and a gold wiremaker named Jacob Hanssen lodged a complaint about withholding pay from officers of the West India Company returning to Amsterdam on the ship Eendracht against Lubbert van Dincklagen, the former sheriff of New Netherland. Van Dincklagen said it was part of dispute with the director-general of the colony, named Wouter van Twiller. Barent sailed on the ship Den Dolphyn to New Amsterdam in early 1638 with his father-in-law, Leendert Arentsen DeGrauw. It is presumed that his wife and her brothers and sisters were also on board. On April 19, 1638,the crew of the Den Dolphyn made a formal complaint to the provincial secretary about how the ship leaked during the voyage and that the captain had not provided enough food for the passengers. Barent and DeGrauw testified that several children belonging to Jan Schepmoes and his wife didn't receive enough food. Barent later was captain of the yacht Amsterdam between 1638 and 1644. He sailed on the Hudson River and was a river pilot for other boats. On April 13, 1654, Barent became a wine and beer carrier for the Dutch West India Company. He watched the company warehouse and was appointed by the New Amsterdam burgomasters as an exciseman. He, along with Joost Goderus, boarded ships in New Amsterdam, searched their contents, and levied duty on the goods they found. On September 21, 1663, Barent was appointed as a public porter and was elected foreman (Elder of the BeerPorters) on July 17, 1665. On April 14, 1657, he was enrolled as a burgher of New Amsterdam and took an oath of allegiance to the city authorities, the States-General of the United Netherlands, and the Dutch West India Company and its director-general. After the surrender of New Amsterdam to the English in September 1664, Barent took an oath of allegiance to the king of Great Britain. Barent and his family lived in house that was owned by the West India Company. This house was on Brough (Bridge) Street. In 1668, the governor conferred title of Barent's father-in-law's land to him. This lot was on Broadway, just south of Wall Street across from the south yard of Trinity Church. The last known record of Barent Jacobsen Cool is at the baptism of his grandson in New York, dated October 21, 1671, in which he is listed as a sponsor.)

Removed to Esopus (Kingston) with marriage of eldest son, Jacob, to Marretje Simons 1 Sep 1689--Took oath of allegiance at Ulster (Kingston) Cole, William Jeffrey, "Presenting the Family of William Jeffrey Cole" (self-pub.), p. 37: "Barent Jacobse Cool was among the very early Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam, although the precise date of his coming to America is not known. In 1633 he was already a person of some consideration in the colony, and on the 8th dayof June of that year he, with Commissary Jacob Van Curler and five others, signed a treaty with the Sachem Tatoepam, Chief of the Sickemanes Indians, owners of the river of New Netherland, called "Connetticuck," by which, in consideration of their receiving twenty-seven ells of cloth, six axes, six kettles, eighteen knives, and various other articles, the aforesaid Indians sold a tract of land called "Sicajook," being the flat extending about one league along the river and one-third of a league in width to the high land, on condition that all tribes might freely and in safety resort to the purchased land for trade purposes. The treaty also provided that the Sachem Altabacuhote was to dwell on the purchased land with the assent of Chief Margaratin of the Sloops Bay Indians.

"About 1637 Jacobse Cool married Marrietje de Grauw, daughter of Leendert de Grauw, a member of one of the Walloon families who were the first settlers of New Amsterdam. The baptism of their nine children all appear on the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, except that of his eldest son, Jacob Barentse Cool, who was born in 1638. Barent Jacobse Cool was enrolled as a "Burgher" of New Amsterdam on the 14th of April, 1657, and took the usual oath of obedience to the city authorities and of fidelity to the States-General of the United Netherlands, to the Dutch West Indian Company and to its Director-General. In October, 1664, after the surrender of New Amsterdam to the English, he took the oath of allegiance to the King ofEngland. He was living on the 21st October, 1671, when he acted as sponsorat the baptism of his grandson, Johannes Villems Van Vreedenberg. The exact date of his death and that of his wife is not known, but the latter was still living in 1668."

12 Jan. 1645: "Before me, Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, appeared Leendert Arentsz, aged forty-four years, and Barent Jacobsz, aged thirty-four years, who at the request of Jan Jansz Schepmoes jointly attest, testify and declare, in place and with promise of a solemn oath if necessary and required, that it is true and truthful that they arrived here in the year 1638 in the ship Den Dolphyn, on board of which were then also Jan Schepmoes, his wife and two children, of which children during the voyage one received half rations and the younger, being a sucking babe, never received any ship's food. All of which they, the deponents, offer to confirm. Done in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland, the 12th of January 1645. Cole, Rev. , Isaac Kool (Cool or Cole) and Catherine Serven, New York: John F. Trow & Son (1876): "The first appearance of Barent Jacobsen Kool on any American civil record . . . bears the date June 8, 1633. The record shows that at that time he held an office in the service of the West India Company. He had probably then been a resident of New Amsterdam for some time. It is likely . . . that he came over with Peter Minuit in 1625. But, beginning with 1633, we can trace him through civil records, and, beginning with 1640, we can trace him through church and civil records down to 1665, the year afterthe surrender of New Amsterdam to the English.)

(Notes: Barent born in Esophus probably about 1678, settled in Philipsburgh where he married about 1700 Mary d/o John Conklin, resided just north of the present Main Street, Irvington, NY. Barent and his wife Maritje united with the Old Dutch Church prior to 1701, but the exact date is not known. In 1706-1708 he filled the office of Deacon, and in 1718, 1722 and 1737 was chosen one of the Elders of the Old Dutch Church. A Barent Duyster was also Deacon in 1748, but is probable that was Barent Jr. and that Barent Sr. had died prior to that date. Doubtless he was buried in the Old Dutch churchyeard, but his grave is unmarked. He doubtless lived on what was long known as the old Dutcher farm at Irvington, and which, at his death, by unwritten law of primogeniture, came into possession of his eldest son, Johannis.) (Note: From - Excerpts from THE DUTCHER FAMILY BY WALTER KENNETH GRIFFIN (Pg.) 6 ... 3. "JAN2 WILLEMSZEN YE DUITCHER" (Wilhelm1). 1 Sept. 1689, Jan appears as "ye duitcher" in Ulster Co., N. Y., and took the oath of English allegiance (Hist. Ulster Co., 69). "Jan Willems- zen" with the subsequently notorious Aert Paterszen Tack, 5 Aug., 1660, purchased of Johanna de Laet, widow of Jan de Hulter, and wife of Hieronymus Ebbinghs of Hamurg, 48 morgens, 2 rods of land at Esopus, for 600 guilders, payable in three annual installments in grain and beavers (Pearson's Rens- selaerwyck, 276-7). Jan Willemszen made his mark. Tack, 14 Aug., 1661 (K., 7), appears in Kingston, and "Jan Willemszen" the same year (1897, Holl. Soc., 131). Burhan's Genealogy, p. 2, mentions an unconfirmed statement of the late Jonathan W. Hasbrouck that in 1663 "Jan Willemszen and his wife" in court at Kingston referred to Jacob Burhans as capable of testifying to their good character, as he came from their town Einigen in Brabant. 18 Sept., 1663, "Jan Willemszen" was fined for ven- turing outside the Kingston stockade, without a guard, in violation of a decree made after the Indian massacre of 7 June, 1663. 14 Sept., 1673, "Jan Willemszen" was lieutenant under Capt. Matheis Mathysen at Kingston (N. Y. State Hist. Rept., 1-383), and 1686-7 "Jan Willemszen" was corporal under the same captain, with "rullof Johnson" as a private (id. 2-451), and in 1687 "John Williamson" with "Barend a holender" (? Barent de Duytscher, 11), were "fottmen" in Capt. Tomes (Thomas) Ger- sones' Co. (id. 2-449). Assuming, as I believe to be correct, that Jan Willemszen ye duitcher is identical with Jan Willemsen, husband of Grietje Cornelisse, the children are: 6 Willem,3 b. 22 Jan., 1662 (K., 13); wit.: Jacob Barentszen (Cool) and Marretjen Simons (his wife); Saertje Jelles (i. e., Sarah Giles). No further trace. *7 Cornelis ye duitcher, b. circa 1667; m. before 1692, Leonora de Hooges. *8 Cornelia Jansen de Duytser, m. Jan., 1689, Jan Wels. *9 Catharina de Duytser, b. at Vlecke Bos, Ulster Co., N. Y. Had a son Lucas, 3 June, 1694, and m. Jan Roeland, 11 Feb., 1700 (K. M., 154). (Pg.) 7 *10 Dirck de Duytser, b. Hurley, Ulster Co.; m. 19 Nov., 1699, Jannetje Bont (K. M., 151). *11 Barent de Duytser, b. Esopus; m.(1) before 1701, Maretje Conckling; m.(2) 29 Dec., 1717, Dirckje Smit (T. M., 21). *12 Roelof de Duytser, b. Marbletown, Ulster Co.; m. banns 19 Nov., 1400, Jannetje Bressie (K. M., 164); d. 16 Jan 1737. *13 David de Duytser, b. Kingston, Ulster Co.; m. 19 Feb., 1714, Elizabeth Davenport (K. M., 309); d. 1773. 14 Tys (i. e., Mathew), b. 24 April, 1681 (K., 217); wit.: Jan Ewoutsen and Volkertjen Jans. Jan Ewoutsen (Ber- gen's Early Settlers) was a pot baker, and it may be noted that Johanna de Laet, from whom Jan Willems- zen bought his land at Esopus, conduted an early pottery at or near Kingston. Volckertjie Jans was 1st wife of Claes Jansen van Boekhaven of Albany in 1662 and prior thereto, when "Jan Willemszen" was there.)
